During Q2 2012 smartphone penetration continued to grow, with 54.9 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers owning smartphones as of June 2012. This growth is driven by increasing smartphone purchases: 2 out of 3 Americans who acquired a new mobile phone in the last three months chose a smartphone instead of a feature phone.

Android continues to lead the smartphone market in the U.S., with a majority of smartphone owners (51.8%) using an Android OS handset. Over a third (34.3%) of smartphone owners use an Apple iPhone, and Blackberry owners represented another 8.1 percent of the smartphone market.

Overall among smartphone owners, Apple had the highest manufacturer share of smartphone handsets. Among recent acquirers who obtained their smartphone during June 2012, 54 percent said they chose an Android handset and 36 percent bought an iPhone.

Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) is developing a smartphone that would vie with Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iPhone and handheld devices that run Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android operating system, two people with knowledge of the matter said.
Foxconn International Holdings Ltd. (2038), the Chinese mobile- phone maker, is working with Amazon on the device, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans are private. Amazon is seeking to complement the smartphone strategy by acquiring patents that cover wireless technology and would help it defend against allegations of infringement, other people with knowledge of the matter said.
A smartphone would give Amazon a wider range of low-priced hardware devices that bolster its strategy of making money from digital books, songs and movies. It would help Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos – who made a foray into tablets with the Kindle Fire — carve out a slice of the market for advanced wireless handsets. Manufacturers led by Samsung Electronics Co. and Apple shipped 398.4 million smartphones and other mobile devices in the first quarter, according to researcher IDC.
Drew Herdener, a spokesman for Amazon, declined to comment.
Mark Mahaney, an analyst at Citigroup Inc., said in November that Amazon is planning to release a smartphone.
Seattle-based Amazon considered buying wireless patents from InterDigital Inc. before the King of Prussia, Pennsylvania- based company said in June that it will sell the assets to Intel Corp. for $375 million, two people said. Amazon is taking pitches and setting up briefings with other sellers, the people said.
Amazon slipped less than 1 percent to $225.05 at the close in New York. Foxconn gained 3.7 percent in Hong Kong.
Amazon beefed up its patent prowess recently by hiring Matt Gordon, formerly senior director of acquisitions at Intellectual Ventures Management LLC, the company that was founded by former Microsoft Corp. Chief Technology Officer Nathan Myhrvoldand owns more than 35,000 intellectual property assets. Gordon will be general manager for patent acquisitions and investments at Amazon, according to his profile on LinkedIn.
Adding patents would help Amazon protect itself against lawsuits alleging illegal use of technology. Amazon has been involved in five patent-related cases this year, and 20 cases last year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
Demand for mobile patents has increased, as shown recently by Google’s $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. and its thousands of patents, which closed this year.

While many have ought to solve the problems, UC Berkeley students have come out with Carat which is a research project that aims to detect energy bugs—app behavior that is consuming energy unnecessarily—using data collected from a community of mobile devices.


How does it work?
You install and run the Carat app on your mobile phone, tablet, or music player. (We currently support iOS and Android platforms.) The app intermittently takes measurements about your device and how it is being used. These measurements are sent to our servers, which throw them into a big statistical stew and try to infer how devices are using energy and under what circumstances. The results of these analyses are then sent back to the app, which can give you feedback and actionable advice about how to improve your battery life.

Carat collects instrumentation data from the community of devices where it is installed. The data is processed by the Carat Server, and stored. Our Spark-powered analysis tool extracts key statistical values and metrics from the data. These are shown in the reports in the Carat App, and used to recommend actions for increased battery life and better user experience.

Fujitsu Laboratories today announced the development of technology that uses a smartphone camera to measure skin condition. In particular, it can accurately gauge skin tone.
The conventional method for measuring the condition of facial skin involved visiting a cosmetics store, where experts used specialized devices to gauge skin tone and condition. Dramatic improvements in the performance of smartphones, however, have opened the possibility of users to analyze the condition of their skin at home using their smartphone cameras. The problem with this approach is that lighting conditions vary from home to home, potentially causing the appearance of the skin tone captured by the camera to differ from the user’s actual skin tone.
To address this problem, Fujitsu Laboratories has created a reference color chart that enables users to accurately measure the color of their skin using a smartphone. The smartphone application also allows users to measure how noticeable skin blemishes or pores are (figure 2). As a result, users can easily determine the condition of their skin at home without visiting a cosmetics store. Moreover, companies selling skin care products can reach customers who don’t visit stores by incorporating this technology into their online sites to use as a product recommendation tool to boost sales.
Features of the Newly Developed Technology
1. Skin Color Gauge Technology
Even if the appearance of the skin tone captured by the camera differs from the user’s actual skin tone due to variations in lighting conditions in each home, compensation technology was developed using the newly created color reference chart to accurately gauge the correct skin tone.
First, users place the chart against their skin and take a photograph using a smartphone (figure 3). The image of the skin also captures the chart’s pattern of standard colors (figure 4), which are used to accurately gauge the color data. This enables the tone of the skin in the image to be accurately corrected using the color differentials between the skin and standard colors. In addition, the standard color pattern is arrayed in four quadrants, making it possible to accurately gauge the tone of the skin, even if there is variation in the colors due to the angle of the lighting, for example.
2. Automated Extraction of the Segmentation in the Color Reference Chart’s Standard Color Patterns
In order to gauge the color in the process described above, it is necessary to accurately capture the pattern of the standard colors within the chart. Fujitsu Laboratories developed technology that enables an edge of the standard color pattern to be extracted from the digital image, allowing the segmentation of each color within the pattern to be automatically extracted (figure 5). When the photograph is taken, even if hair or a finger partially obscures the standard color pattern within the chart, the segmentation of each color can be accurately extracted.
