It happened for the first time in Pakistani telecommunication history that mobile phone services were blocked on the Eid ul Fitr in the name of security. And now, according to Dawn news, Pakistan’s interior minister Rehman Malik has given this idea of ending the pre-paid mobile phone SIMs/services in Pakistan.
This means that removing over 150 million subscribers and bringing them back to the age of stones. Rehman Malik has indicated ending of prepaid mobile phone service as it is widely being used by terrorists for conducting terrorism.
In his defense, the minister said that the suspension of mobile phone service on Eid helped controlling terrorism in the country. The services were shutdown in Lahore, Karachi, Multan and Quetta. Despite the closure of cellular service, a time bomb exploded in Quetta city killing 3 innocent people. Whereas, firing incidents could not be stopped in Quetta and Karachi as well on this Eid.
Speaking to the media after visiting Police Line, Islamabad, Malik said that mobile phones have become the biggest weapon of terrorists in the country, and the blockade of prepaid services is being reviewed. Malik added that the government had successfully blocked around 10 million illegal SIMs, but almost 50% of SIMs were registered on fake identity cards.
A final decision regarding an end of prepaid mobile SIM/Service is yet to be taken after consulting all the stake holders.According to official figures, There are nearly 150 million prepaid mobile phone subscribers in Pakistan.
