Google Play Launches Interactive Books App For Android [Download NOW]

in Apps / No Comments

Google Play Books enables you to read more than 4 million books on the go, and it’s available in the U.S., Canada, Australia, Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Korea and Japan. Today Google is bringing new features to the Books app to help you better explore your books and understand what you’re reading.

Places and dictionary
School’s now in full swing and students are picking up the classics. Whether you’re diving into Moby Dick or trying your hand at some Tolstoy, we want to make your reading experience as enjoyable and rewarding as possible. Starting today, when you come across an unfamiliar geographic location—a faraway city or distant mountain range—you can tap on the location to learn more about it. You’ll see an info card with a Google Map and the option to get more information by searching on Google or Wikipedia.

Explore locations using info cards in Turn Right at Machu Picchu: Rediscovering the Lost City One Step at a Time

Similarly when you come across an unfamiliar word (say, abligurition or jentacular), just tap it for a quick definition.

Translation
For those adventurous readers making their way through books in non-native languages, you can now easily translate words or phrases to and from a number of languages. Just select the text or word and use the button on the top action bar to indicate which language you’d like translate into.

Highlighting and notes
If you happen to page through any of the books on my shelf, you’ll likely find highlighted passages and illegibly scrawled notes in the margins. Starting today, our app lets you highlight text and easily take notes. And because all your books live in the cloud, highlights and notes sync on your tablet, phone and the web.

You will also notice a new sepia reading theme (in addition to the current day and night themes), 2D sliding page turn animation, and lots of stability improvements. Finally, you can now read Japanese books in a vertical, right-to-left layout—and flip pages from right to left.

Personal And Professional Social Media Networking Mindsets And Differences Explained [Video]

in Social Networking / No Comments

Thumbnail

We covered a blog post about how LinkedIn’s study about the habits of humans and why they love social networking yesterday. The research called the Mindset Divide is one of the greatest surveys of the habits modern humans have when it comes to sharing experiences online be it personal or professional.

Lets look at today how social networking both personal and professional cater to the modern man

Mindset On Personal vs. Professional Networks

The biggest difference between personal and professional networking is purpose and mindset. We learned that people exhibit two very different mindsets when they engage on social platforms – a personal one to passively “spend time,” and a professional one to actively “invest time.” On personal networks, people are driven to socialize, find entertainment and generally kill time. The research found that people are more than 3 times as likely to use personal networks for entertainment rather than professional networks. In turn, they are 3 times as likely to use professional networks to keep up to date with their career over personal networks.

And the type of content users expect from networks aligns to the differences in mindset. In a ranking of the types of content users expect, “Updates from Brands” was ranked #2 for those using professional networks and #9 on personal networks. Professional network users crave insights above all else and expect to hear from brands 26% more on professional networks than they do on personal ones.

Emotional Drivers On Personal & Professional Networks

It’s easy to assume personal networks capture more of users’ emotion and passions as they share their personal lives – but our study reveals something very surprising – users are also driven by a deep well of emotion when engaging on professional sites. While these emotions are less obvious than those on personal networks, powerful desires like ambition, security, achievement, progress and happiness are lying just under the surface of the professional’s engagement. Not only do emotional appeals in marketing drive greater ROI* , the deep emotion on professional networks provides fertile ground for building meaningful relationships.

5 Tips For Optimizing Marketing With Mindset
By understanding the mindset and emotion across different social networks, marketers can improve relevance, engagement, and amplification of brand messages. Here are a few tips on how to tap into the professional mindset and drive results:

  1. Recognize the separation between personal and professional networks and the opportunities they present.
  2. Frame how the brand helps users gain knowledge and success on professional networks.
  3. Engage information-hungry influencers with exclusive content.
  4. Align the brand with emotion by matching messages to user mindset – casual updates versus insights-driven content.
  5. Build meaningful relationships by participating, sharing and listening.

Google Launches The 3rd Google Code-In Development Contest

in Technology / No Comments

Today marks the launch of the third Google Code-in, an international contest introducing 13-17 year old pre-university students to the world of open source software development. The goal of the contest is to give students the opportunity to explore the many types of projects and tasks involved in open source software development. Globally, open source software development is becoming a major factor in all industries from governments, healthcare, and relief efforts to gaming and large tech companies.
When you hear the term “open source” do you ask yourself:

  • What exactly is open source?
  • How can I get involved in open source software development if I’m just starting to learn how to code?
  • What types of work do open source projects do?
  • I’d like to work on open source but I’m not really a coder, what else can I do?
  • I’ve never worked on a global project using IRC and chat groups: can someone help me?

If you’ve wondered about any of these questions and are a pre-university student (age 13-17) then you should join in on the fun with the Google Code-in contest starting November 26, 2012.

From late November to mid January, students will be able to work with 10 open source projects on a variety of tasks. These projects have all successfully served as mentoring organizations working with university students in our Google Summer of Code program.
The types of tasks students will be working on will fall into the following categories:

  1. Code: Tasks related to writing or refactoring code
  2. Documentation/Training: Tasks related to creating/editing documents and helping others learn more
  3. Outreach/research: Tasks related to community management, outreach/marketing, or studying problems and recommending solutions
  4. Quality Assurance: Tasks related to testing and ensuring code is of high quality
  5. User Interface: Tasks related to user experience research or user interface design and interaction

Over the last two years we have had 904 students compete in the contest from 65 countries. This past January Google announced the 10 Grand Prize Winners for the 2011 Google Code-in. In June, Google flew the winners and a parent/legal guardian to Google’s Mountain View, CA headquarters for a 5 day/4 night trip complete with an awards ceremony, talks with Google engineers, Google campus tour, and a full day of fun in San Francisco.

Visit the Frequently Asked Questions page on the Google Code-in site for more details on how to sign up and participate. Please help us spread the word to your friends around the globe. If you are a teacher that would like to encourage your students to participate, please send an email to our team at [email protected] We would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Stay tuned to the contest site and subscribe to our mailing list for more updates on the contest. Google will announce the 10 open source organizations that will be participating in the contest on November 12. The Google Code-in contest starts on November 26, 2012.

Europe Launches CleanITProject : Will Monitor Twitter, Facebook And Social Media Activities Of Users

in Security / No Comments

The Clean IT project

Police across Europe will “patrol” Facebook, Google and Twitter for postings supporting terrorism in a new initiative called the “Clean IT” initiative.

The Internet plays a central role and is of great strategic importance for terrorists and extremist networks. These networks know that propaganda is a critical tool for generating funding, recruits and support for their cause within these communities. Historically they have used a variety of media channels, such as television, radio and publishing, in order to communicate their views. During the past decade of huge global growth of the Internet, Al Qaida influenced extremists for example, have made increasing use of this medium. The Internet and its fast and anonymous means can contribute to individual radicalization processes. There are concerns about the use of the Internet for terrorist purposes and the misuse of legal / neutral websites. The question is if we can reduce the impact of the use of Internet for terrorist purposes, without affecting our online freedom. Therefore this project is based on a public-private dialogue.

The Clean IT project is carried out with the financial support from the Prevention of and Fight against Crime Programme of the European Union, European Commission – Directorate-General Justice, Freedom and Security.

The project team is hosted at the Ministry of Security and Justice, National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism and Security, in the Netherlands.

Barack Obama And His US Government Spent $70,000 In An Ad Condemning The Anti Islamic Film

in Pakistan / No Comments

Pakistan Deploys Army as Protests Over Anti-Islam Film Flare

In an effort to quell the riots erupting throughout the Middle East, the U.S. State Department began airing a 30-second ad in Pakistan Thursday in which President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemn the low-budget, anti-Islamic film that incited the violent protests.

“I hope it’s obvious that the United States government had absolutely nothing to do with this video,” Clinton said of the shoddily shot film titled “Innocence of Muslims.” “We absolutely reject its content and message.”

An Urdu translation accompanied the President’s declaration that the U.S. rejects “all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others,” adding, “but there is absolutely no justification for this type of senseless violence.”

In order to effectively reach the largest number of Pakistanis possible, the U.S. spent $70,000 to run the ads.

State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland explained, “In the case of Pakistan, it is common and traditional to have to buy airtime on Pakistani TV for public service announcements.  So in that environment, it was their recommendation that we buy some airtime to make sure that the Pakistani people would heard the President’s messages and the Secretary’s messages.”

Another ad of normal Americans denouncing the film is also airing.

Checkout These Photos Of People Waiting In Line To Buy The iPhone 5 Outside Apple Stores Globally

in Apple / No Comments

I am amazed how some people spend their evenings and nights just to buy a phone on the street. The new iPhone 5 was released on the 12th of September 2012 and as usual many people have been lining up just to get the new phone. Here is a panoramic image taken by the iPhone 5 itself of these people waiting outside the store.

iPhone 5 Line Panoramic

Here are some other images of people waiting for the new iPhone 5 in Line

These two in Sydney thought they would get the first iPhone 5 in the world…

But outside the fans looked cold and uncomfortable!

These folks in London had coffee to warm them up.

Here's the scene at a mall in Louisiana

The line is long over in Tokyo, too, even though it's raining.

SAI: Tools writer Kevin Smith waited until daylight to get in line. He's number 11 at an AT&T store on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

In Japan, these two enjoyed their 15 seconds of fame as they were some of the first in the world to get an iPhone 5.

Over the channel, they lined up in Paris, too. (Then again, the Louvre gets lines like this every day)

You know, I would have thought the line in Munich would have been much more…organized.

People started camping out at Apple's flagship store in New York last week. Kinda look like moths around a light bulb, no?

Taming The Email Beast : How The New MS Exchange Helps Solve Email And Security Overload

in Technology / No Comments

This is the age of big data. Around the world, people are creating and transmitting data in unprecedented volume. At the same time, organizations have an extraordinary need to manage liability of this information. A survey conducted by Harris Interactive in March of 2012 showed that 68 percent of companies send sensitive data via email. Another survey showed that 63 percent of organizations are extremely or very concerned about their organization losing sensitive data without their organization knowing it.

Enterprises face extraordinary challenges in keeping all this data safe. Staying ahead of ever-more-sophisticated external threats such as viruses, malware, and spam is a daunting task in businesses of all sizes. IT managers also need to comply with industry regulations by preserving data in a way that is both immutable and accessible. They must also deal with the risk that users will unintentionally create data leaks, typically due to a lack of awareness or education. For example, in April of 2012, a physician at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences emailed a document containing the un-redacted personal financial information of 7,000 patients to an outside party.Businesses need tools that can prevent this type of common but potentially disastrous error.

While the responsibilities of IT professionals grow, their relative numbers dwindle. Over the next ten years, while worldwide data is expected to grow exponentially, the number of people employed in IT will increase only fractionally. With the ratio of data to IT professionals growing rapidly, it is becoming increasingly critical to enable workers to manage this email risk without hindering their productivity and experiences, and to automate and streamline the risk management process wherever possible. Microsoft understands and is addressing these challenges. The data protection and archiving features of Exchange are designed to help IT professionals take control of data protection and archiving in a big-data world. These new and improved features include:

  • Cloud-based email hygiene with Exchange Online Protection
  • Data Loss Prevention (DLP) technology to identify, monitor, and protect sensitive information
  • In-place email archiving, hold, and native data governance to preserve email as long as necessary
  • Advanced, yet easy-to-use eDiscovery tools to locate information in the organization
  • Integration with SharePoint supports safe team collaboration with site mailboxes

Move Email Protection to the Cloud with Exchange Online Protection

Exchange Online Protection is the Microsoft cloud-based email protection service, which works with Exchange on-premises and online. Companies using Exchange Online Protection no longer have to worry about the disparity between data volume and staff available to manage it. They also benefit from email protection that is continuously updated to deal with present and emerging threats. Microsoft security researchers constantly monitor spam, phishing, malware, and network attacks globally and update Exchange Online Protection to protect against them. Exchange Online Protection uses a sophisticated multi-engine malware detection approach to catch viruses and spam messages before they are delivered. Even the most security-conscious companies would find it difficult to maintain the level of security vigilance, innovation, and virtually unlimited scalability Exchange Online Protection provides.

To keep customers’ email available 24/7, Exchange Online Protection uses a globally load-balanced network of data centers to provide five nines (99.999 percent) network uptime. Exchange Online Protection can actually increase email reliability by queuing email for up to five days, eliminating bounces if on-premises email servers go down. Exchange Online Protection is also highly scalable: when organizations grow, Exchange Online Protection grows with them, seamlessly.

Moving email hygiene to the cloud also has a number of operational benefits. Microsoft has designed Exchange Online Protection to help customers offload the costly, repetitive, and unproductive aspects of email protection such as purchasing and servicing hardware, applying software updates, and managing network connections. At the same time, it gives customers control over what really matters to their businesses. Organizations can set specific filtering rules and policies through an easy-to-use, web-based administration tool. Exchange Online Protection also delivers comprehensive reporting, auditing, and message trace capabilities.

Use Sensitive Data Safely with Data Loss Prevention Technology

Many organizations handle personally identifiable information (PII), financial data, regulatory or other sensitive information in the daily course of business. They need ways to ensure data is sent and used appropriately, keeping it safe without affecting worker productivity. Data Loss Prevention (DLP) technology in Exchange uses deep content analysis to identify, monitor, and protect sensitive information.

Exchange administrators can easily create DLP policies in the Exchange Administration Console. DLP policies can include rules, actions, and exceptions, and uses the full power of Exchange transport rules. Upon identifying sensitive information, DLP can automatically take action such as applying Information Rights Management protection, appending a disclaimer, generating an audit log, sending the message for moderation, or preventing a message from being sent. DLP works with a new feature called Outlook Policy Tips that informs users of a potential policy violation before it occurs. Policy Tips help educate users about what sensitive data has been found in the email and can educate them about related company policies. This ongoing education helps users manage data appropriately and avoid sending sensitive data to unauthorized users. The DLP feature is a sophisticated system built into Exchange for helping users work with sensitive data safely and efficiently.

Manage Data with Large Mailboxes, In-Place Archiving, and Retention Policies

With growing volumes of email data, organizations used to face a difficult choice: keep email archives on slow, expensive, third-party archiving systems, or limit the amount of historical email available to users. With Exchange, organizations can provide users with large mailboxes and keep archived and current email data in one system through in-place archiving technology. This provides a number of advantages. Users can access archived and current email quickly and easily, and they no longer have to waste time managing their inboxes to stay within quotas. They also do not need to store messages in .PST files outside the control of Exchange administrators and backup policies.

From the perspective of IT, administrators have the flexibility to balance storage performance and cost to suit business needs. They can manage and search archived and current email through one interface and no longer need to deploy and maintain separate archiving infrastructure. This also means they have a single place to manage compliance and retention.

With large mailboxes, organizations need efficient, automated ways to manage message retention and expiration. Exchange provides easy-to-manage policies for controlling how long messages are kept so users do not have to worry about it. Retention policies can apply to messages, folders, or even entire mailboxes. Organizations can achieve all these benefits while choosing to keep Exchange archives on-premises or in the cloud using Exchange Online Archiving.

Making Data Tamper-Proof with Hold and Searching It Efficiently

Many organizations need the ability to capture and store email in a tamper-proof (or “immutable”) archive. HR policies or litigation can create the need to make content immutable. At one time, virtually the only way to enforce immutability was through journaling—basically, forwarding email to a special, separate archive deployed and managed independently from Exchange. Today, Exchange makes immutability simple with in-place hold. With this technology, an IT administrator can easily place a group, a user, a mailbox, or even individual items on hold from the web-based eDiscovery Center. Users on hold experience no change to their workflow, and there are no client plug-ins to manage.

The ability to search current, archived, and held email is critical in big data environments. Because it can keep archived and active email data in one system, Exchange makes such searches easy. In tandem with SharePoint, Exchange allows organizations to search email, instant messages, calendars, and contacts, as well as SharePoint documents, sites, file shares, blogs, wikis, and more, all from the eDiscovery Center. For greater efficiency, IT administrators can use role-based access control to delegate search, hold, retention policy management, and auditing to HR or legal personnel without providing full administrative privileges. Finally, auditing capabilities built into Exchange can record configuration changes and compliance activities. Audit logs can be used to prove due diligence and, if necessary, pinpoint tampering by an administrator.

Collaborate while Maintaining Compliance using Site Mailboxes

With site mailboxes, Exchange works with SharePoint to give users more ways to collaborate while keeping data safe. In a site mailbox, members of a SharePoint site can access project emails and documents in a central location place—right from Outlook on the desktop or the SharePoint site itself. Users view site mailbox emails just as they would any other Exchange message, while SharePoint enables versioning and coauthoring of documents. Site mailboxes can be searched using the Exchange eDiscovery Center, and the email and documents stored in site mailboxes can be put on legal hold. Additionally, site mailboxes adhere to the lifecycle policies applied to the SharePoint site with which they are associated, enabling automated retention and archiving of the entire site mailbox.

Turn Email Data from Challenge to Asset

Exchange helps organizations deal efficiently and effectively with the explosion in email data. A wide range of new technologies built into Exchange can reduce costs, improve security, and keep workers productive. Businesses can move email hygiene to the cloud with Exchange Online Protection, stopping viruses and spam before they get anywhere close to the company’s network. New DLP technology enables organizations to work with sensitive information safely and helps everyone in an organization better manage sensitive data. In-place archiving and large mailboxes offer better access to the information and organizational knowledge contained in past email while eliminating the need for third-party archives. Built-in eDiscovery functionality makes it easy to find needed information across held, archived, and current email. In tandem with SharePoint, organizations can search email, instant messages, calendars, and contacts, as well as SharePoint documents, sites, file shares, blogs, wikis, and more, all from the eDiscovery Center. Site mailboxes allow users to naturally work together – while compliance policies are applied behind the scenes. By integrating all of these data protection features into one system, Exchange greatly simplifies IT infrastructure and helps reduce costs. With Exchange, organizations can do more than tame vast and growing amounts of email data—they can turn it to their advantage.
