Here Is What Marissa Mayer Has Done To Radically Change Yahoo [Analysis]

in Internet / No Comments

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer Commanding a Room

After two months on the job, new Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer today held an all-hands meeting with employees to announce her turnaround plan for the company.We are starting to get details on what, exactly, she said. We’re not going to describe our sourcing, because we want to keep people employed.

The big points seem to be that Yahoo will work very hard on personalization and mobile.Mayer’s strategy for mobile is interesting: apparently she is going to bring in people who can build great apps through “acqui-hires.”

Also, Mayer seems bent on hiring more talent into the company, giving that talent resources, and then holding employees accountable.Mayer, we’re told, emphasized making things faster at Yahoo.

Mayer did not speak much about specific products, like search, front page, Yahoo Finance, or Yahoo Sports, as had been predicted.She did not talk about any future layoffs, opting to keep things “very positive.”

Here are the broad outlines of what she did say:

  • Mayer defined Yahoo. Paraphrasing, she told employees: “Yahoo, as a company, excels at personalization across content and ads.”
  • She emphasized user growth, ad sales, improving ad tools, and attracting better talent.
  • Mayer said that Yahoo will do more “acqui-hires,” where it buys small companies not for their products, but for their engineering talent.

Mayer outlined Yahoo’s guiding strategy:

  • The goal is to become something users touch every day.
  • Yahoo will focus more. To paraphrase: “Do more of what we’re good at and less of what we’re not.”
  • Yahoo will be partner friendly.
  • Yahoo will be strong in mobile by 2015.
  • Projects will only be green-lit if they can scale to 100 million users or $100 million in revenue.
  • Yahoo will move faster, giving employees more deadlines, ownership, resources, and tools.

Mayer said Yahoo will nurture talent through “the Four Cs.”

They are:

  • Culture
  • Company goals
  • Calibration
  • Compensation.

How To Never Run Out Of Business : It’s Not About Profit It’s About Effort [Fred Wilson]

in Entreprenuership / No Comments

The Business Model Canvas

Its time to kick off my Skillshare class on Sustainability. I will do a post each week this month (on Mondays of course). I will do office hours on Google Hangouts on Mondays at 6pm eastern for 30 minutes all month. We will do a project together which is to create a sustainable business model canvas. And there are groups you can create or join to allow you to collaborate with each other to complete the project and the class.

To join today’s Office Hours on Google Hangouts, please check out the Skillshare page. There will be instructions there later today. [update: you can access the office hours hangout when its live here or afterwards via an archive here]

I will start with a post on Short Term Profit Maximization vs Long Term Business Health and then will end with some comments on our Business Model Canvas project.

—————————————————————————————–

If you want to stay in business forever, you have to focus on the long term. You must construct a business model that builds confidence and trust with your customers and keeps them coming back day after day, year after year.

Many business schools teach executives and entrepreneurs that business is about profit maximization. I don’t believe that. I believe business is about making a profit that sustains the business and enriches the owners but is not maximized in any period (month, quarter, year). I believe the goal of a business is sustainability so that all the stakeholders (customers, employees, owners, suppliers, etc) can rely on the business for the long term.

Let’s use an example. You own a business that operates on the web. You are a leading supplier of ecommerce to a vertical market. You generate $50mm in annual revenues and make a profit of $5mm a year. You see the launch of the iPhone and Android and think that your customers are going to want to connect to your business via their mobile phones. You ask your VP Product to scope out what it would take to build a comprehensive set of mobile apps that will allow this. She tells you it will take an investment of $5mm over two years to complete this project. You gulp. That is going to reduce your profits by $2.5mm a year in each of the next two years. What do you do? You make the investment because you must invest in the long term success of the business even though that is not a profit maximizing event. It may simply get you back to the $5mm per year of profits you were making before. There may be no ROI on this investment in a positive sense. It may simply be a defensive investment. You still need to make it to ensure you will be around for the long run.

Clay Christensen talks about this kind of thing all the time. Big company executives are asked to calculate an return on investment (ROI) on the investments they want to make. If the ROI isn’t greater than some minimum hurdle, the company doesn’t make the investment. And so along comes a smaller competitor who makes the investment and they eat the big company’s lunch.

ROI is not the right framework for companies to evaluate investments. ROI is for the wall street folks. They will use it to decide if they want to invest in your company. But when you make investment decisions in your company, don’t use the tools that wall street uses. Use the tools that animals use. Survival instincts. What will it take to ensure that your company is around in ten years, fifty years, 100 years? That’s how to think if you want to stay in business.

One of the most difficult decisions entrepreneurs and executives have to make is the decision to disrupt their own business. Let’s say you are a cable operator. You are making billions of dollars of profits each year providing voice, video, and data services protected by a monopoly business model. Along comes the Internet and it allows voice and video to be delivered to your customers via any IP network (wireline, cable, wireless, etc). You know that over time, this is going to disrupt your business. What do you do? Do you invest in this new technology and drive it into the market, hastening the decline of your monopoly protected business model or do you do everything you can to slow down the advance of this technology?

Sadly most executives make the latter choice. Most entrepreneurs make the former choice. The latter choice is about short term profit maximation but can, and often does, lead to the demise of the business in the long term. The latter choice is about survivability even though it will almost surely lead to a less profitable business in the future. Tough choice. But to me its an easy choice if your goal is long term survival.

One of the reasons entrepreneurs make these hard choices when executives don’t is entrepreneurs think like owners. They have that survival instinct in their gut. They don’t want their baby to die. Executives are hired guns. They are focused on maximing the success of the business (and their compensation) over a short period that they will in the corner office. They have no incentive to think about what happens in 20 years or 50 years. They know they won’t be around. And so the company isn’t around either.

So when you construct your business model and create the culture of your business, emphasize sustainability over profit maximization in everything you create and do. This does not mean that you don’t need to make a profit. Profits are the essence of survivability. You can’t and won’t survive without profits. They are everything when it comes to sustainability. But just because you need to make a profit doesn’t mean you need to maximize it. Balancing the need for a profit with the need to sustain the business is the art of what you must do as the leader of a business. Do both and you win.

—————————————————————————-

Our project in this course is to create a sustainable business model canvas. If you are not familiar with the Business Model Canvas watch this video:

You will either have a business or you will invent a business and then you will map out your Business Model Canvas with the goal of sustainability as you go. You can do this by yourself or in teams. It doesn’t matter at all. The goal is to do this project and learn by doing.

HP Announces The ElitePad 900 Windows 8 Tablet For Business Users

in Tablets / No Comments

HP today introduced the HP ElitePad 900, a tablet that balances a beautiful design with enterprise-grade features, functionality and support.

Designed for business and government, it features HP ElitePad Smart Jackets,(1) which add connectivity options and an additional ultra-slim battery for longer runtime, along with specific add-ons that customize the tablet for specialized uses.

HP ElitePad tablet for business

The HP ElitePad is an ultrathin, lightweight tablet designed for Windows 8(2) that delivers features to keep IT managers happy and touts a design that employees will crave. It offers the full serviceability, enhanced security and manageability found in HP Elite PCs, and military-grade durability for drops, vibration, dust, temperature extremes and high altitude.(3)

“Businesses used to face a tough purchase decision:  How to find a product that will delight employees and help them be more productive, while also making sure IT can secure and manage it,” said Todd Bradley, executive vice president, Printing and Personal Systems, HP. “The HP ElitePad meets all those tests. It combines the great style and user experience consumers demand with the features IT requires.”

A tablet that is made for business

Ergonomically designed to fit comfortably in the hand, the HP ElitePad offers a 10.1-inch diagonal display, weighs just 1.5 pounds(4) and measures 9.2 millimeters (mm) thin. The 16-by-10 aspect ratio maximizes the display area for ideal viewing of traditional business applications, as well as video content. Precision crafted, with an eye toward fit and finish, the HP ElitePad uses stylish, premium materials such as CNC-machined aluminum and Corning® Gorilla® Glass 2.

Powered by next-generation Intel® mobile processors, the HP ElitePad delivers PC productivity for those on the go and Intel x86 compatibility for existing business application support. It is designed for Windows 8 and supports touch-, pen- or voice-based input. The HP ElitePad also provides power efficiency and smartphone-style convenience with compatibility for familiar Windows applications, as well as easy integration into existing IT environments.

The unique, productivity-enhancing ecosystem of HP Smart Jackets and additional accessories designed specifically for the HP ElitePad expand the tablet’s potential, turning it into a total enterprise solution: (1)

  • HP ElitePad Productivity Jacket—includes an integrated keyboard, connectivity ports, SD card reader and adjustable viewing angles for a complete computing experience.
  • HP ElitePad Expansion Jacket—adds USB, HDMI and other connectivity to get more done on the go. Adds even longer battery life when bundled with the optional HP ElitePad Jacket battery.(5)
  • The HP ElitePad Rugged Case—provides military-grade reliability and enhances the stylish profile of the ElitePad for added protection.
  • HP ElitePad Docking Station—delivers an enterprise-class desktop experience with an added keyboard and monitor and also charges the tablet. Or, use it to set the tablet up as a secondary screen for phenomenal multitasking.
  • HP Executive Tablet Pen—lets customers write messages and notes in their natural handwriting directly on screen and then save or convert to typed text for use in other applications.

Loaded with tools for mobile work or play

The HP ElitePad tablet’s 1080p front-facing video camera and 8 megapixel (MP) rear camera with an LED flash and included CyberLink YouCam software help users easily communicate face to face, create high-definition (HD)(6) web videos or record training videos without high production costs.

Powered by technology from HP Labs, the company’s central research arm, new HP PageLift(7) is an application that automatically trims, correctly lights and orients a captured image of a whiteboard, paper contract or other document so it is ready to use or share without requiring manual editing.

Users can easily print directly from their HP ElitePad to any ePrint-capable HP printer or to a networked HP printer without the need for downloading drivers. HP ePrint software(8) allows users to print remotely at more than 24,000 public locations such as hotels and business service retailers.(9) The HP ElitePad also helps small workgroups connect with HP Wireless Hotspot, a desktop application that allows users to share a wireless internet connection and network bandwidth.(10)

Additional user-experience software includes the CyberLink Media suite, which enables users to manage and create audio and video content with the same easy-to-use interface as other HP business PCs. Plus, users can record and listen to audio with a stereo microphone and headset jack that feature the richness of SRS Audio.

Information management is made easy with Evernote, which captures, saves and synchronizes information across devices with impressively quick search capability, and Skitch software that eases collaboration with colleagues by quickly marking up images with captions or sketches.

Manageability, deployment and security for IT environments

The HP ElitePad offers a long life cycle, stable image and HP Global Series Support, all of which IT managers expect in an enterprise tablet. It also features a one-year standard warranty, with the option for a three-year warranty via HP Care Pack Services. The HP ElitePad is fully serviceable with an optional, industry-unique service tool for HP Self-Maintainers that allows customers to access the panel, battery, motherboard and unibody chassis, helping reduce downtime and keep sensitive data and devices in-house.(11)

In addition, organizations will appreciate the enterprise-caliber data, device and identity protection from HP Client Security,(12) including HP BIOS Protection, Security Manager and HP Drive Encryption. Additional security features include Device Access Manager, Computrace(13)and Sparekey.

Device deployment and ongoing support and maintenance are made easy with x86 compatibility and support for HP Client Management solutions. The LANDesk Management Suite(1) also increases security and eases management by providing differentiated tools to locate and protect data on lost devices, remotely capture SIM card info for mass WWAN activation(14) and enforce geographic policies to remotely lock, full wipe or selectively wipe data.

Thousand Of Indians and Pakistani Sign Aman Ki Asha Petition To Help Bridge Divide [Video]

in Pakistan / No Comments

Since 1947 Pakistan and India have been the fiercest of enemies having a discord on the splitting up of the Indian Subcontinent (Indo Pak). Now many people in the modern times are fed up of the wars taking place and after the historic agreement on September 8, many people have come forward to bring about a change in further relationships between the people of India and Pakistan.

A petition movement has been started on Change.org which addresses many issues. Read the letter below and checkout the petition so you can participate for better relations between India  and Pakistan.

Greetings,
We, the people of India and Pakistan, and of Indian and Pakistani descent living in other countries, demand the right to visit our families across the border in ‘the other country’ – to see our parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and, in some cases, our children. We demand the right to travel in the countries of our ancestors, to walk along coastlines and roads that represent our collective past, to seek and spread harmony across a subcontinent not divided by politics and propaganda. We welcome the new relaxed visa regime that has made the India-Pakistan border seem less daunting for ordinary people, but we urge the governments to “stay the course” and move towards lifting the remaining restrictions.
• Allow long-term visas, especially to members of divided families and other applicants who meet the security and visa criteria;
• Allow Indian and Pakistani cross-border spouses the same rights and privileges as spouses of other countries married to Indian or Pakistani citizens, or at least resident visas;
• Allow visa on arrival to members of divided families, particularly senior citizens and children;
• Allow tourist visas between India and Pakistan not just for groups with approved tour operators but also individuals;
• Make police reporting on arrival and departure the exception rather than the rule;
• Do away with the requirement of entry and exit from the same point, using the same mode of transport also for those entering by foot/road at Wagah/Attari;
• Allow visas to be valid for the entire country (subject to reasonable restrictions) rather than a few cities;
• Re-open the Mumbai and Karachi consulates, and consider opening more consulates in major cities;
• Make student visas freely available;
• Curtail unnecessary paperwork (India’s requirement of a sponsorship certificate for Pakistani applicants is particularly cumbersome);
• Ease visa restrictions for citizens of other countries who are of Indian or Pakistani descent, dual nationals, or expatriates from each other’s countries (eg. India demands that Pakistani dual nationals give up their Pakistani passport in order to travel on the passport of the adopted country).
In addition, we urge the governments to do away with restrictions that are completely outdated in today’s cyber world, and to:
• Allow more than two journalists each to be based in each other’s countries;
• Undo the ban on cell-phone roaming;
• Undo the ban on cross-border media, television and publications.
We reiterate that the authorities must refrain from trying to control the movements of their people, when their minds are free. It is mutual trust and genuine collaboration that will enable us to break from the past and repudiate the legacy of hatred and animosity. We can truly progress when ideas and art, business and tourism, and collaboration in the fields of health, sustainability and poverty alleviation are allowed to flourish and flow. Only then can our people and countries reach their full potential.

Google Prepares To Celebrate World Teachers Day On this Friday [Video]

in Education / 1 Comment

Google Forms a teacher/student connection

For most of us, there’s at least one teacher whose name we will never forget—that favorite teacher who made a difference in our education, whether they were our first grade art teacher or a professor in college. For me, that teacher was Ms. Kiran my 4th grade science teacher. Ms. Kiran didn’t just foster my love of science—she understood that 4th grade can be a tough time for students as they try to navigate social cliques and prepare for the pressure of high school. Ms. Kiran knew that taking the time to ask us if we were feeling okay was just as important as teaching us about geological formations. She didn’t just care about teaching us—she genuinely cared about us as people.

And secretly I had a big crush on her as well!!!

This Friday is World Teachers’ Day, and we want to honor the teachers like Ms. Kiran who helped make us the people we are today. We’ve long supported education through technology, offering free tools like YouTube Edu and Google Apps for Education, and by developing cost-efficient devices like Chromebooks. But it’s the teachers who really make the difference by creatively incorporating that technology into their classrooms. As technology usage in schools increases, we hear even more amazing stories about how teachers and students are using our products to foster collaborative learning.

And that usage is growing quickly. As of today, more than 20 million students, faculty and staff worldwide use Google Apps for Education. In addition, in the last year we announced that:

  • 400+ universities are posting lectures and/or full courses online using YouTube Edu
  • 600,000 staff from the Philippines Department of Education will now be using Google Apps
  • Universities across the continents are signing up for Apps, including schools inPoland, Spain, the Netherlands and Africa
  • More than 500 schools and districts went back to school with Chromebooks this fall
  • Seven of the eight Ivy League universities and 72 of this year’s top 100 U.S. universities (as determined by 2013 U.S. News and World Report’s ranking) have gone Google with Google Apps for Education

As a tribute to the educators who are putting these tools to work, this week Google be highlighting a few amazing teachers on our Google in Education page on Google+. To kick off the series, we want to celebrate Ms. Kornowski—a science teacher at Kettle-Moraine High School in Wales, WI, who is using Google Forms to bring her students together.

Klout And Microsoft Bing Bring On The Social Influence Game Onto The Search Engine

in Internet / No Comments

Microsoft Bing and Klout are partnering up to bring social measured score of influence on to the searching game.
Microsoft
and Klout both believe that the growth of the social web and the increasing importance of your online identity are fundamentally transforming the Internet, making it even more important to understand people, not just pages. Like Microsoft, Klout is a friend to all social networks. We both want to help everyone discover relevant people regardless of the specific networks on which they’re active. And this is just begun to tap into the knowledge and insights “search through people” will enable, now and into the future.

Microsoft has made a strategic investment in Klout and that they have signed a multi-year agreement where Bing will become one of Klout’s most significant partners.

Starting today, you will notice that Bing is surfacing Klout Scores and influential topics for experts that are listed in the “People Who Know” section of its social sidebar. The Klout Score and topics are a helpful signal for understanding why you should trust recommendations from these experts. By clicking through to those users’ Klout profiles, you can see their best moments and gain additional context and insights into their expertise. It’s the “social resume” at work!

Bing

As part of the partnership, Bing will provide additional data to Klout. Search data has long been one of the missing signals in our effort to fully recognize a person’s influence. Just as Wikipedia articles can reflect a person’s real world influence, search results for a person signal accomplishments achieved beyond social networks and serve to influence others. There will be two data points from Bing that will initially be highlighted as part of Klout moments. Experts who appear in Bing’s “People Who Know” section of the sidebar will be recognized on Klout. Influencers who have a Wikipedia account associated with their Klout profile will also be rewarded for the frequency that they are searched on Bing.

Over the next few months, Klout will include this data in the Klout Score and continue to add signals generated from Bing searches. The coverage of people who have Bing data associated to their Klout account will continue to increase as Klout helps surface more influencers in Bing search.

MSN And Bing Get Windows 8 Metro Style Treatment: New Apps Make News and Communication Elegant

in Software / No Comments

The launch of Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 10 will change the way we use devices and the internet.  It opens up a new class of opportunities for us to reimagine all of our products and services including MSN. MSN with more than 480 million visitors per month is the top site in 27 markets and remains one of the most popular media destinations on the Internet.

When we saw what Windows 8 and IE 10 could make possible, we saw possibilities we had never before imagined.  Microsoft has thought deeply about how you could interact with MSN in an increasingly touch and tablet-friendly world.

Introducing MSN for Windows 8

Staying in the know just got easier and faster. Designed exclusively for Windows 8, the all new MSN will be the first thing you experience when you launch Internet Explorer 10 on your new device.

Available October 26th, MSN for Windows 8 gives you a place where you can be informed, decompress and let your curiosity reign. From the updated user interface to blazing fast speed and comprehensive content, MSN showcases what it does best – instant access to the information you want.

Fluid Design

At first glance, you will notice the new look and feel. The new MSN is a full-screen experience that is clean, simple and built for touch. Whether you’re reading daily headlines or catching up on the latest gossip, the experience is intuitive and consistent. The content flows from the homepage to channels without interrupting the visual layout, and you’ll know what stories are most important, just by viewing the size of the story tile.

News You Want, Faster

MSN for Windows 8 is built for speed. Because Internet Explorer 10 was designed to take advantage of the system architecture of Windows 8, rendering complex page layouts and high resolution images is faster and more fluid.  Now you can easily view images, slideshows and videos, without compromising the overall experience. The result is a cleaner more “app-like” experience that allows you use the Flip Ahead feature to swiftly jump from article to article with a simple gesture.  The pages render twice as fast as the classic MSN web experience. You can use the Snap feature to snap a given page to the side of screen – say your favorite stock- while you engage in another program or page.
