Telenor DJuice Launches Developers’ Competition ‘APP Mein Kitna Hai Dum!’ To Promote Entrepreneurship In Pakistan

DJuice Pakistan has launched of Apportunity-2012 ‘APP Mein Kitna Hai Dum!’ a competition for Pakistani students and software developers to create mobile phone applications (apps). The aim is to promote apps development in Pakistan on platforms such as Apple iOS, Google Android and Nokia’s Symbian among others. The launch of the competition was announced at a bloggers meet-up in Karachi which was attended by representatives from Telenor Pakistan, people from academia, partner vendors, small & medium enterprises, and budding entrepreneurs.

The Technology Café was there at the event and I would say it was possibly the best launch of promoting entrepreneurship ever.

Usman Javaid, Director Marketing djuice & Telenor Pakistan in a message at the launch said: “djuice Apportunity, which is now in its second year, is fast becoming the platform of choice for amateur Pakistani app developers to exhibit their talent. We hope to continue to provide opportunities to the talented youth of Pakistan to enable them to excel in their fields.”

Last year, 460 apps were registered by developers in 63 cities. This year djuice Apportunity teams in partnership with Nokia, Google and Qualcom will conduct app development workshops in 60 colleges and universities in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. Prizes for the winning developers include laptops, smartphones and free air-time. Participating universities with the most apps developed and the highest number of apps downloaded will be able to win djuice Mobile Labs set up with Apple hardware, shields and gold medals for their app developers who will also get preferred internships at djuice/Telenor Pakistan offices.

Under this program, DJuice will help developers in getting their apps published on app stores including Nokia, OVI, Google market place, and Apple app store. Apart from all the publishing related hassle for the developers, we will help them get good placements for a smoother app discovery process. So what are you waiting for? Register now and enter the competition to win exciting prizes that empower you for a better future.

Telenor Offers FREE Wikipedia Access To All Its Customers In Asia And Europe

Telenor Group and the Wikimedia Foundation today announced a new partnership to offer Wikipedia free of traffic charges on mobile devices to Telenor customers in Asia and Southeastern Europe.  This initiative is part of the Wikimedia Foundation’s mobile strategy, which focuses on reaching the billions of people around the world whose primary opportunity to access the Internet is via a mobile device.

"The Wikimedia Foundation is working to remove barriers to free knowledge, and for most people around the world right now, cost and accessibility are the two biggest hurdles," says Barry Newstead, Wikimedia Chief Global Development Officer. "We applaud Telenor for joining us to deliver free access to Wikipedia for their customers. Through this partnership, we move a step closer to providing the sum of all knowledge to everyone in the world."

The 3-year partnership between Telenor Group and the Wikimedia Foundation will cover 135 million users. The agreement is signed by seven countries: Thailand, Malaysia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Montenegro, and Serbia. By the end of the year, more markets are expected to join. The agreement will be implemented step by step throughout 2012, with the first markets launching during the second quarter.

"We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with the Wikimedia Foundation. Telenor have pioneered affordable, mobile communications across much of Asia, and we have built a track record of offering vital services with a significant outreach" says Kristin Skogen Lund, Executive Vice President and Head of Digital Services at Telenor Group. "With this agreement, we are first in Asia to bring a vast knowledge source to the millions in underserved communities across the region."

Customers with a Telenor SIM will be able to access a version of the encyclopedia for as many times as they like in a given period, at no charge, as long as they stay within Wikipedia’s pages.
