Unofficial Surface Ad Bashes The iPad Mini Into Smithereens [Viral Video]

in Tablets / No Comments

This spot for Microsoft Surface might not be an official, company-endorsed attack ad — like Samsung’s Apple bashing campaign strategy — but it sure does a great job destroying the iPad mini.

The ad was created by Cinesaurus, a Seattle-based creative team that has done work for Google and Gap, and makes fun of Apple’s first iPad mini spot. After remixing the iPad’s modest rendition of “Heart and Soul,” the Surface literally smashes that iPad mini screen everyone has been complaining about.

Dell Unveils A New Range Of Windows 8 Based Tablets [Pictures]

in Tablets / No Comments

Even though Microsoft isn’t officially launching Windows 8 until October 26, its hardware partners are racing to announce their new systems that will run the operating system. Yesterday, Sony revealed its Windows 8 roster, and earlier in the week, Lenovo unveiled its lineup.

Now it’s Dell’s turn. The computer giant may be reeling in the age of smartphones and iPads, but it hopes to turn things around with three new systems, one of which seems to be the form factor du jour. The XPS 12 Convertible Touch Ultrabook (pictured above) combines laptop and tablet features, with a hinged design that lets you flip it from laptop to slate. It comes with a 12.5-inch full HD display, and for its $1,199.99 base configuration, you get an Intel Core i5-3317U Ivy Bridge processor, 4GB of RAM, and 128GB solid state drive. Other configs include a $1,399.99 version with Core i7-3517U CPU and 8GB of RAM, a $1,499.99 model that doubles the RAM and SSD capacity (while keeping the base i5 processor), and the $1,699 full enchillada with Core i7, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB SSD.

dell-XPS-One-27-desktop-pc-computer-windows-8

Dell is also rolling out a pair of its all-in-one desktop PCs that have been augmented with touch capabilities for Windows 8. The XPS One 27 (pictured) comes with a large 27-inch screen with 2,560×1,440 resolution (what Dells dubbs “quad HD”), Intel Core i5-3330s Ivy Bridge processor, 6GB of RAM, 1TB hard drive, DVD burner, and built-in Wi-Fi. With specs that are otherwise pedestrian, the XPS One 27′s high cost — $1,599.99 — is all about its spacious display.

For shoppers on a budget, the Inspiron One 23 offers a 23-inch display with 1,920×1,080 resolution, though only an Intel Pentium G645 processor. It also includes 4GB of RAM and 500GB hard drive, and like the XPS One 27, comes with a DVD burner and built-in Wi-Fi. But unlike its bigger brother, the Inspiron One 23 only costs $779.99.

Of course, the existing Dell lineup will also start shipping with Windows 8 in the coming weeks. Are the new models enough to turn Dell’s fortunes around? While they keep pace with competitors’ offerings, they certainly don’t go out on a limb like Sony’s new Tap 20 “tabletop” PC.

in Apps, Tablets / No Comments

With the holiday season now approaching, Google is creating even more ways for great tablet apps to be featured in Google Play – including a series of new app collections that highlight great apps specifically for tablet users.

To help you take advantage of the opportunity provided by the growing tablet market, Google has put together this Tablet App Quality Checklist to make it easier for you to ensure your app meets the expectations of tablet users.
The checklist includes a number of key focus areas for building apps that are a great experience on tablets, including:

  • Optimizing your layouts for larger screens
  • Taking advantage of extra screen area available on tablets
  • Using Icons and other assets that are designed for tablet screens

Each focus area comprises several smaller tasks or best practices. As you move through the checklist, you’ll find links to support resources that can help you address the topics raised in each task. The benefits of building an app that works great on tablets is evident in the experiences of Mint.com, Tiny Co, and Instapaper who reported increased user engagement, better monetization, and more downloads from tablet users. You can find out more about their experience in these developer case studies.

Samsung And Google Partner Up To Launch Nexus Tablets Early Next Year

in Tablets / No Comments

Google's Nexus tablet.

A Google Nexus 10-inch class tablet is in the works. The 10.1-inch tablet will boast a pixel density that is higher than Apple’s third-generation iPad, said Richard Shim, an analyst at NPD DisplaySearch. The 2,560×1,600 display will have a PPI (pixels per inch) of about 299, said Shim. That tops the 264 PPI on the 9.7-inch 2,048×1,536 Retina iPad.

“It’s going to be a high-end device,” Shim said — in contrast with Google’s $199 Nexus 7 and upcoming $99 tablet.

But probably the biggest news is the partnership with Samsung. “They’ll partner with Samsung and cobrand it with Samsung,” Shim said.

To date, Google has partnered with Asus on the Nexus 7 tablet. A co-branded tablet with Samsung would be a significant broadening of Google’s relationship with Samsung. Google already cobrands the Galaxy Nexus Samsung smartphone. Shim characterized his information about the 10.1-inch Nexus as “supply chain indications,” which typically indicates a high likelihood that the product will come to fruition, according to Shim. Shim also confirmed that Google will start production on a $99 tablet in December.

in Tablets / No Comments

Yoga 13

Lenovo today announced a new family of four convertible devices designed for Windows 8/RT to change the way people use PCs and redefine the future of mobile computing. For consumers, the touch-optimized family includes the IdeaPad Yoga 13, a foremost blend of play and productivity, Yoga 11, a svelte, all day mobile companion, IdeaTab Lynx, a premier dual core Intel® Atom-based™ tablet, and for professionals, the ThinkPad Twist, a business-ready device that puts a new spin on the traditional convertible tablet.

“Our family of Ultrabook™ convertibles addresses the unique needs of consumers, businesses and everyone in between by creating high performance laptop-tablet combinations in new designs and different sizes,” said Peter Hortensius, senior vice president, Lenovo, and president, Product Group, Lenovo. “We think these innovative convertibles are the best devices for a groundbreaking touchscreen experience, plus their multi-modes give people even more ways to use their PC.”

IdeaPad Yoga 13 Flexes Into Totally Unique Poses

The IdeaPad Yoga’s revolutionary hinge allows it to uniquely move 360° and fold from laptop to tablet in one simple motion. As one of the world’s first multi-mode Ultrabooks, Yoga 13 provides a high level of flexibility between work and play without compromises. Infused with powerful 3rd generation Intel® Core™ processors and running Windows 8, Yoga 13 provides laptop-grade performance to get work done all day without slowing down with its super slim 16.9 mm frame and eight hours of battery life.

At the flip of the hinge, Yoga 13 transforms into a media-friendly tablet primed with rich audio-visual features including Dolby® Home Theatre®. Visuals – photos, videos and websites – look stunning on its 13.3-in high definition IPS display, which provides bright background and vivid colors. Users can even gesture to flip through photos and other content with Yoga 13’s special Motion Control technology or simply use their fingers on the multi-touch screen.

“The Yoga convertibles are a great example of the commitment Lenovo has made to continued innovation with Windows,” said John Case, vice president, Worldwide OEM Marketing, Microsoft Corp. “The commitment is evident in the beautiful hardware designs that exhibit flexibility, mobility and extended battery life; combining that with the new capabilities of Windows 8 these PCs provide an experience that is sure to delight customers.”

IdeaPad Yoga 11 Balances Power and Mobility

Yoga 13’s smaller screen size counterpart, Yoga 11, is the world’s slimmest multi-mode PC, measuring just 15.6 mm. Yoga 11’s slim design, 11.6-in screen and long 13 hour battery life make it a great convertible for mobility. Equipped with NVIDIA Tegra 3 – the world’s only quad-core processor for Windows RT – Yoga 11 lets users watch HD movies, play games, get connected and stay productive with Microsoft Office applications virtually all day long. As an added bonus, both Yoga 13 and 11 can be used in completely new ways: convert them into a Stand1 by flipping the keyboard behind the screen to comfortably watch movies or view pictures up close, or bend them upright like a Tent2 to bring games or video chats to life.

“The IdeaPad Yoga 11 is elegant, thin and light, combining the convenience of a tablet with the capability of a laptop,” said Rene Haas, vice president, Notebook Business Unit, NVIDIA. “Powered by the energy-efficient Tegra 3 processor, the Yoga 11 lets you work and stay connected all day long – and leave your laptop charger at home.”

IdeaTab Lynx Connects to Digital Life

The IdeaTab Lynx is one of the first Windows 8-based tablets with the latest dual core Intel® Atom™ processor. This feather light 11.6-in tablet caters to the mobile individual who wants to combine fun and work: users can interact with a variety of Windows 8 apps via its multi-touch screen when on the go or they can connect it to its keyboard for a full-function PC experience that includes writing documents in Microsoft Word, creating presentations in PowerPoint and building spreadsheets in Excel. With Lynx, users can leave the power plug behind thanks to its incredible 16 hours of battery life (with optional base), and they can enjoy cinema-quality sound with Dolby® Home Theatre® and easily connect to printers, hard drives and other accessories with a full size USB port when attached to the base.

The all-new Kindle Fire and the Kindle Fire HD family of tablets include a new feature, called Billboards, that introduces customers to new apps using engaging and colorful imagery.  In a similar fashion to how large outdoor billboards are designed to catch the eye, our Billboards feature makes use of engaging imagery on the all-new Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD storefront to introduce customers to new apps. Billboards is one of the newest features to improve app discoverability for both customers and developers.

Where's my perry billboard

Customer Experience

When customers view the store on an all-new Kindle Fire or Kindle Fire HD device, they’ll see multiple scrollable billboards at the top of their screen.  Each billboard serves as an immediate entry point to its app’s detail page where the customer will have the opportunity to purchase or download the app.  Promotional images will be curated from our selection of apps and highlighted in the billboards placement. We recommend developers use promotional images that visually communicate the essence of their app.  The promotional image should speak to what your app is all about, your brand and should entice customers to simply check out your great app.  Customers will see billboards on the all-new Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD.

Creating Your Billboard

Promotional images should be 1024 x 500 pixels and in PNG or JPG format.  When creating your image,Amazon recommends that you strive for an engaging image that speaks to what your app is all about. Make your image colorful to catch the eye of customers, and choose imagery that promotes the essence of your app and brand. Text on your promotional image should be large, simple, and readable. Do not add the price to the image ($0.99) or any discount call outs (50% off).

This would be devastating news for those of you who are die hard Linux pro’s and fans. Intel, the Chip making giant has announced that it will be only supporting the upcoming Windows 8 OS to be compatible with the all new fast super processing power Clover Trail Chips.

Intel is pushing the Clover Trail Chip into tablets, a category of devices that is dominated by Linux based Android and the Unix BSD based IOS, giving clearly Microsoft the lead it needs in the post PC tablet era.

Many developers on the web are opposing the decision Intel has made and are claiming that can run Linux after all it is an x86 based architecture and are threatening Intel in terms of creating a mass anti-movement.
