Microsoft Advertising Unveils Windows 8 AiA Concepts at Cannes 2012

in Advertising, Microsoft / No Comments

During last months Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity Microsoft gave it’s advertising and publishing partners a sneak peek at the rich advertising solutions they are creating for Windows 8 apps.

When developing Windows 8, Microsoft reimagined it with a focus on the consumer experience. They are creating opportunities for ads within Windows 8 apps in the same way – by putting people at the center of the experience. Over the last six months Microsoft has focused on the new Windows 8 Advertising SDK and the potential of Windows 8 to deliver rich, brand-safe ad experiences that will add value to consumers and increase engagement opportunities for marketers. Today, they are one step closer to helping brands tell engaging stories to their customers in meaningful ways with beautiful ads in Windows 8 apps.

Microsoft Advertising is also taking a new approach in how we develop advertising experiences on Windows 8. True to our belief in fostering growth in the ecosystem, Microsoft is partnering with some great creative agencies to ideate and visualize beautiful display experiences across a multitude of marketer goals for the Windows 8 apps ecosystem.

With creative agency partners that include AKQA, Big Spaceship, Razorfish, Team Detroit, UM and Y&R. All six will be lending us their creative minds and expertise as we co-develop early advertising concepts.

To give you a sense for what this might look like, here is an example of what an ad experience in a  Windows 8 app environment could potentially look like:

Fig. 1 The brand’s story, in this example Adidas, is integrated seamlessly within the Seattle Sounders FC app in the Windows 8 experience

Fig 2. Clicking on the Adidas ad will bring you to a rich brand landing experience that offers Adidas merchandise. A single click will take the customer back to the Seattle Sounders FC app which can be downloaded in the Windows 8 marketplace.

Fig 3. A panoramic view of the full Seattle Sounders FC app (as it would look when swiped). As you can see the ad is at the end of the app. The background of the app can also integrate a brands videos, text or other rich assets.

Microsoft Shows Medical Proof of Concept Illustrating How Intelligent Systems Can Streamline Patient Care

in Microsoft / No Comments

http://www.microsoft.com/global/en-us/news/publishingimages/ImageGallery/Images/Products/Windows/Embedded/HealthcareIntelligentPOC_Web.jpg

Healthcare providers can improve the level of care they provide to patients by taking advantage of intelligent systems, which connect data, processes and devices across internal departments and geographical boundaries. In addition to connecting disparate data within hospitals and clinics, intelligent systems can help facilitate home healthcare and independent living by helping patients monitor their health and send the information to providers automatically.

Microsoft’s Windows Embedded team, the Microsoft Innovation Center in Torino, Italy, and Microsoft HealthVault have collaborated with Freescale and Kontron to develop an intelligent system proof of concept that seamlessly connects the Freescale home health hub reference platform, FDA-certified panel PCs, servers and in-home medical devices. The system enables patients to automatically relay medical data from devices to physicians or family members via the cloud, connecting a touch-screen information display in the home, devices such as blood pressure monitors and glucose monitors, and medical data systems located at a hospital or a physician’s office.

A physician can review information and provide feedback directly to the patient: for example, an updated prescription, advice on how to manage new symptoms or a recommendation to come in for an examination. Family members or caregivers can access the shared information through HealthVault on a Windows Phone or other Internet-enabled mobile device, enabling them to keep track of their loved ones’ health when they can’t be present. The proof of concept shows how an intelligent system can help senior citizens continue to live independently while managing chronic health conditions.

Microsoft Innovation Center Torino specializes in projects that build on embedded systems and cloud technologies. Fabrizio Dominici, head of the Microsoft Innovation Center Torino – ISMB, says the healthcare intelligent system proof of concept illustrates how intelligent systems draw on both to help improve people’s lives.

“It’s important to solve the problem of assisted living,” Dominici says. “This project tries to create a bridge between people with medical problems at home and the hospital where the doctor is located. From our point of view, this is a perfect scenario for an intelligent system.”

The Microsoft Innovation Center team, in close cooperation with the other collaborators, studied the project architecture and developed the application layer for both the mobile application that runs on Windows Phone 7 and the panel PC used at the hospital. Freescale developed the home health hub reference platform and the project architecture. Kontron developed the flat-panel PCs running Windows Embedded Standard 7, as well as the KISS Server running Windows Embedded Server. These devices meet regulatory requirements for healthcare settings to enable physicians and nurses to access information in a hospital or other care facility.

Freescale’s systems and applications team located in Toulouse, France, developed the reference platform, the hardware design and layout, middleware and management components, the HealthVault client integration, and the remote user interface. The reference platform collects data coming from different medical devices and conveys information to and from the HealthVault medical cloud server.

“There is no clear direction for remote patient technologies in terms of connectivity options or protocols,” says Steven Dean, Global Healthcare Segment lead, Freescale. “What Freescale has been able to do is to provide our medical OEMs and design house partners with a reference design platform that I call the ‘kitchen sink of connectivity.’”

The solution offers an extensive range of connectivity options on the front and back ends, reflecting the fact that the medical systems market is currently fragmented. Regulatory requirements for medical devices, which also vary by country, impose an additional set of demands for devices that cannot be met by more familiar consumer products.

“There are very difficult certification and hardware requirements for such medical devices,” says Werner Ressle, director of Software & Software Services, Kontron AG. “Just think about how to clean and sterilize without scratching the surfaces of displays. You need the device to be reliable; just think about the data in the hospital environment — it must be reliable because your life depends on it.”

The Kontron team contributed an intelligent medical-grade patient monitor (panel PC) running Windows Embedded Standard 7 that could be mounted on a wall, at the bedside, or at a doctor’s or nurse’s desk to enable touch-screen access to patient information. This patient monitor is commercially available now, and Kontron will continue to contribute intelligent devices, including tablets, to the medical market in the near future.

The proof of concept shows how the reference platform connects data from specialized medical devices and home health devices with medical data systems to enable patients and caregivers to make more informed healthcare decisions. Patients can connect with a doctor without the hassle of scheduling appointments and traveling to a hospital or clinic; automated reporting helps ensure accuracy and makes it easier to identify and address medical problems before they become more severe.

While the healthcare intelligent system itself is a proof of concept and not commercially available, a number of medical OEMs are currently implementing the reference platform developed by Freescale as a central communications hub capable of bringing together information from disparate devices and institutional systems. The reference platform is gaining notice beyond the OEM world; it recently won the 2012 UBM ACE Award in Development Kits, Reference Designs, & SBCs. Both Kontron and Freescale are able to work with individual customers or user groups to implement systems that meet the regulatory and performance needs of the locations where they will be used.

Dominici says the healthcare intelligent system proof of concept is a perfect example of the innovative projects that Microsoft Innovation Center Torino seeks to develop. The Microsoft Innovation Center works to support the Microsoft ecosystem, as well as distributors and partners, and engages in industry cooperation to help industries innovate through the development of prototypes and participation in European projects. Healthcare is one industry where this collaboration results in solutions to real-life problems; another similar project serving a different domain is the Home Energy Gateway, an intelligent system that enables home users to track their energy consumption patterns and make changes to ensure efficient use of resources.

“This project can have an impact on people’s lives,” Dominici says. “Not only in healthcare but in energy — with the same technologies, we can help people at home in many situations.”

Ressle agrees. “I personally wanted to be part of this because this is not just a consumer device where you play game or chat with friends,” Ressle says. “We want to help create technology and devices that matter. This needs the best technology and the best people in the industry working together. We see this as our commitment to relevance and lifesaving technology.”

Microsoft Launches Latest Version Of Trip And Event Planning Software Streets And Trip 2013

in Microsoft / No Comments
Nobody wants to spend more money than necessary to fill the gas tank, and drivers want to get the most out of each gallon. Making efficient, customized travel plans is now easier than ever with today’s launch of Microsoft Streets & Trips 2013, the new edition of the popular trip-planning software.
Current users of Streets & Trips will find the new 2013 version offers a sleek and clean look in high contrast designed for easier viewing, updated maps of the United States and Canada — including 150,000 new miles of roads since the 2011 version was released — and more than 2.5 million points of interest. Longtime fans will also find they can now turn all pushpin names on or off with a single click, and they can create larger drive times for more flexibility in trip planning.

“A new feature people are really going to love is the online ratings and reviews. Customer ratings and reviews on restaurants, hotels and more take the guesswork out of deciding where to go,” said Larry Petersen, software design engineer at Microsoft Corp. “Streets & Trips 2013 adds upgrades our customers have asked for, including 600,000 more points of interest than the previous version.”

The 2013 version of Streets & Trips is designed to help travelers plan the perfect trip start to finish — generate maps and directions, customize with start and stop times, and add notes such as reservation numbers or operating hours — all without an Internet connection.

For many truckers, RVers, family vacationers and other motorists, laptops have become an essential travel accessory. Microsoft Streets & Trips helps them efficiently plan and customize their travel before they hit the road. Whether the day calls for visiting an amusement park, winery, casino, national park or museum, there is a stop along the way for everyone when using Streets & Trips. One-click route optimization provides the most efficient route, and a fuel consumption manager helps consumers budget gasoline costs. Then, while on the road, Streets & Trips on a laptop helps travelers find necessities such as ATMs, hotels, auto services, restaurants and more, with no Internet connection required, helping plan for — or discover — plenty of fun and useful stops along the way.

“Microsoft Streets & Trips helps travelers tailor personalized itineraries with as much or as little detail as they prefer,” said Lori Stock, group product marketing manager for Streets & Trips at Microsoft. “It’s a great travel companion and easy-to-use laptop tool that really helps our customers’ travel inspirations become a reality. Everyone will appreciate how the software takes so many hassles and headaches out of the road trip while providing personalized options for creating memorable experiences.”

Availability

Microsoft Streets & Trips is available for purchase today, online at the Microsoft Store (http://www.microsoftstore.com) for an estimated retail price of US$39.99. Microsoft Streets & Trips with GPS Locator is available for US$69.99.** Consumers can give Streets & Trips a test drive by downloading a free 14-day trial version at http://www.microsoft.com/streets/travel.

Microsoft Confirms Purchase Of Enterprise Social Network Yammer For $1.2 Billion

in Microsoft, Social Media / No Comments

microsoft yammer

Yammer lets businesses can set up private “social” networks where employees can communicate.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Is corporate America ready to adopt social networking alongside traditional office tools like word processing apps and spreadsheets?

Microsoft is making a big bet in that direction. It has acquired Yammer, an “enterprise social networking” startup, for $1.2 billion in cash. The deal is Microsoft’s (MSFTFortune 500) biggest acquisition since Skype, which it bought last year for $8.5 billion.

Yammer operates like a gated Facebook (FB): A business can set up a private network where employees can post announcements, share files, create events, swap messages and more. It also offers more traditional corporate features like a content management system and an “extranet” that businesses can use to communicate with outside contacts like customers and vendors.

Buying Yammer “underscores our commitment to deliver technology that businesses need and people love,” Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said in a prepared statement.

Yammer, which was founded in 2008, had raised about $142 million in venture funding. It claims more than 200,000 corporate customers, including 80% of the Fortune 500 list.

So-called “enterprise social” startups have been hot in the M&A space lately. Salesforce (CRM) snapped up the social media marketing company Buddy Media last week for a cool $689 million. That was just one month after Salesforce bought collaboration software company Stypi.

In late May, Oracle (ORCLFortune 500) acquired Buddy Media competitor Vitrue for a reported $300 million.

Microsoft Opens Up It’s SmartGlass Xbox SDK For Developers

in Microsoft, SmartGlass, Xbox / No Comments

Microsoft made available for download on June 21 the software development kit (SDK) for its recently announced SmartGlass Xbox companion application.

SmartGlass, an application Microsoft unveiled at the E3 conference in early June, is an application for Windows 8, Windows Phone, and other portable devices that will connect phones, PCs and tablets with your Xbox 360 console by displaying supplemental content on those devices. The app will work with iPads, iPhones and Android devices, not just Windows 8 and Windows Phone. SmartGlass is a souped-up version of Microsoft’s current Xbox Companion app.

The SmartGlass SDK is available to “partners that have agreements to develop Xbox games or entertainment applications for the Xbox 360 console,” a Microsoft spokesperson said. It also appears to be available to Microsoft employees. The SDK is downloadable here. The SDK includes Xbox SmartGlass Studio for building SmartGlass “activities”; a JavaScript library, which includes “a set of device APIs that are consistent across all platforms”; and sample code.

Microsoft’s press release on SmartGlass noted that it will be available “with select games and Xbox Live content and requires Internet connectivity and compatible devices.” Xbox Live Gold membership will be required for some Xbox SmartGlass-enabled content and features. SmartGlass is not available now; Microsoft officials are saying “later this year,” which seems to imply there may be an Xbox Live Dashboard update required to make this work.

Microsoft Launches Revamped Bing Image Search : Say Hello To Big Pictures And Refining Options

in Bing, Image Search, Microsoft / No Comments

In the last few weeks, Microsoft has launched a beautiful new look for Bing search. Starting today, they are also rolling out the same fresh look for Image search, which makes up 7% of all Bing searches. Say goodbye to tiny thumbnails and hello to an endless stream of big, beautiful pictures from across the web. Bing has always been known for its great image search, and now we’re making the whole experience even more immersive and fun.

Image one monuments

When you check out the new image search, the first thing you’ll notice is the pictures themselves. The new image search makes images shine. Bing now shows bigger thumbnails and lay them out seamlessly so you can take them all in at once. Try these examples and you’ll see the difference:

  • Planning a vacation? Bing Yosemite and see what you have to look forward to, or check out Florence for a European adventure.

  • Need some fashion advice? Bing Lady Gaga for inspiration, or try a short haircut.

  • Just want a pretty background? Bing has flowers, puppies, and more!

Dealing with Image Search Overload

When you’re making a presentation or hunting for clipart, finding just the right picture can feel overwhelming. There are so many options out there, and nobody wants to click on each one to see more. That’s why Bing made it easier than ever to find the right image.

Bigger thumbnails

Image results much larger so you can find exactly what you want with fewer clicks. Bing has trimmed out all our empty whitespace and filled it with pictures to make image search more visual.

Magnifying glass

When you hover on an image, you’ll immediately get a blown up preview that follows your mouse around. You can hold up this “magnifying glass” to any picture and see its size, title, and where it comes from. It’s smooth, fluid, and a little bit addictive.

You shouldn’t have to hunt to find what you want. That’s why we made it easier than ever to reach Bing’s advanced search tools. Along the top, you can find filters for searching by size, color, type, layout, and faces. It’s never been easier to find wide photographs of purple flowers.

When you typed “Chicago”, did you want the city or the sports team? Are you looking for the skyline or a map? To help you search more effectively, we suggest refinements that make your query more specific so you find what you need faster. We completely revamped these related searches to make them higher quality and more relevant for everyday tasks.

Get lost in the experience

The new image search is a powerful tool, but it’s not just a tool. Now it is more fun to use. When you search for hot celebrities, funny cats, or cute puppies, it’s easier than ever to sit back and enjoy yourself. You never know that you might find. The right side of the page is devoted to discovering new things. When you search for a person, Bing will recommend similar people to check out, movies they’ve been in, etc. It works for almost anything – try Obama, Sun Chips, or polar bears.

Bing has also brought our popular trending searches feature to the results page, where you can discover what other Bing users are looking for. That way, you’re always on top of the biggest trends.
