Google Analytics Launches ECommerce And Custom Variables Support

in Google / No Comments

In today’s web era the factor of ECommerce is very much important and that is why Google is improving it’s tracking code and processing which will result in improvements to filtering and custom variables for ecommerce sites. With a range of Ecommerce plugins available to do this as well, these changes will allow you to better filter, segment and categorize the revenue generating portion of your traffic.

What’s changing: You will now be able to utilize custom variables for your ecommerce data, allowing you to better segment your revenue generating traffic. We will also be expanding filters for ecommerce to support page title, hostname, request URI & internal search term. Previously ecommerce data didn’t respect profile filters for “page-level” data.

As an example: Say you are tracking www.website.com and store.website.com. In order to analyze store traffic separately you have created a duplicate profile with a filter that includes traffic to store.website.com only. Currently, ecommerce reports would include data across both store.website.com and website.com which is not working as expected. Following this change, ecommerce reports would respect the filter to only include data from store.website.com which we believe is the correct behavior.

Important Note: If you have any profile filters for page level data (i.e. hostname or URIfilters, which are somewhat common), keep in mind that this change will mean ecommerce data is only included for the subset of traffic you are filtering for. Google strongly encourage you to take a look at your filters to ensure there are no unexpected disruptions following this change.

Google Maps Now Covers The Arctic Circle

in Google / No Comments

Search for [cambridge bay] on Google Maps and you’ll fly to a tiny hamlet located deep in the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut in Canada’s Arctic, surrounded by an intricate lacework of tundra, waterways and breaking ice. High above the Arctic circle, it’s a place reachable only by plane or boat. Zoom in on the map, and this isolated village of 1,500 people appears as only a handful of streets, with names like Omingmak (“musk ox”) Street and Tigiganiak (“fox”) Road.

There are 4,000 years’ worth of stories waiting to be told on this map. Today, Google is setting out on an ambitious mission to tell some of those stories and to build the most comprehensive map of the region to date. It is the furthest north the Google Maps Street View team has traveled in Canada. Using the tools of 21st century cartography, Google is empowering a community and putting Cambridge Bay on the proverbial map of tomorrow.

The hamlet of Cambridge Bay

Google is not doing it alone, but with the help of the community and residents like Chris Kalluk. Today Chris played host to a community Map Up event in Cambridge Bay, where village elders, local mapping experts and teenagers from the nearby high school gathered around a dozen Chromebooks and used Map Maker to add new roads, rivers and lakes to the Google Map of Cambridge Bay and Canada’s North. But they didn’t stop there. Using both English and Inuktitut, one of Nunavut’s official languages, they added the hospital, daycare, a nine-hole golf course, a territorial park and, finally, the remnants of an ancient Dorset stone longhouse which pre-dates Inuit culture.

Catherine Moats, a member of the Google Map Maker Team, working with Chris Kalluk and others at the Community Map Up.

Now Google is pedaling the Street View trike around the gravel roads of the hamlet and using a tripod—the same used to capture business interiors—to collect imagery of these amazing places. We’ll train Chris and others in the community to use some of this equipment so they can travel to other communities in Nunavut and continue to build the most comprehensive and accurate map of Canada’s Arctic.

“This is a place with a vast amount of local knowledge and a rich history. By putting these tools in the hands of our people, we will tell Nunavut’s story to the world.”

You can now checkout the spectacular beauty and rich culture of Canada’s Arctic—one of the most isolated places on the planet that will soon be, thanks to the people of Cambridge Bay, just a click away.

Google Maps Shows You Schedules Of Over 1Million Public Transits Worldwide

in Google / No Comments

Since 2005, Google has collaborated with hundreds of transit authorities around the world to make a comprehensive resource for millions of riders to find out which bus, train, subway or tram can take them to their next destination. Today, Google Maps has public transportation schedules for more than one million transit stops worldwide, in nearly 500 cities including New York, London, Tokyo and Sydney.

Public transportation information is especially useful when it’s in the palm of your hand. Today Google has released an update to the Google Maps for Android app (version 6.10) which makes this transit information even more useful. We’ve made some changes to the Transit Lines layer, so that you can select a specific mode of public transportation (train, bus, tram or subway) to display on the mobile map, hiding the other modes. This is helpful in areas where there is a tight concentration of several types of public transit.

Left: Mobile map with all modes of public transit shown; Right: Transit Lines layer in Subway mode

They have also updated the layout of station pages to be more useful. Open it by tapping on the name of the station on your mobile map.

Updated station pages show you departure times, lines serving the station and the distance to nearby stations.

In addition to these new transit features, Google has updated region highlighting, My Places and Location History displays in Google Maps for Android:

  • Now, whenever you search for a city or postal code, the borders of that region are highlighted.
  • Under My Places you’ll notice we’ve added new tabs, which will help you access all your information from a single place; from your saved maps for use offline to your starred places and Custom Maps created on your desktop.
  • If you enable Location History, you’ll be able to browse the places you’ve been on a daily basis with an updated Location History dashboard.

Whether you’re looking for schedule and fare information, directions by public transit or nearby stations, Google Maps puts comprehensive, accurate and useful transit information at your fingertips. Update to the latest version of Google Maps for Android in the Google Play store.

Google Patents Search Now Lists European Patent Office Patents And Prior Art Finder

in Google / No Comments

Since 2006, Google has let people discover, search, and read United States patents online. Starting this week, you can do the same for the millions of ideas that have been submitted to the European Patent Office, such as this one.

Typically, patents are granted only if an invention is new and not obvious. To explain why an invention is new, inventors will usually cite prior art such as earlier patent applications or journal articles. Determining the novelty of a patent can be difficult, requiring a laborious search through many sources, and so Google has built a Prior Art Finder to make this process easier. With a single click, it searches multiple sources for related content that existed at the time the patent was filed.

Patent pages now feature a “Find prior art” button that instantly pulls together information relevant to the patent application.

The Prior Art Finder identifies key phrases from the text of the patent, combines them into a search query, and displays relevant results from Google Patents, Google Scholar, Google Books, and the rest of the web. You’ll start to see the blue “Find prior art” button on individual patent pages starting today.
This tool will give patent searchers another way to discover information relevant to a patent application, supplementing the search techniques they use today. Google says it will be refining and extending the Prior Art Finder as they develop a better understanding of how to analyze patent claims and how to integrate the results into the workflow of patent searchers.
You can even translate different patents written in different languages such as french via this years released an update to Google Translate that incorporates the European Patent Office’s parallel patent texts, allowing the EPO to provide translation between English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Swedish, with more languages scheduled for the future.

Google Optimizes Hangouts On Air: Making Live Concerts More Awesome With Studio Mode [Video]

In particular: singer/songwriters like +Daria Musk bands like +Suite 709  and many others are using Hangouts On Air to perform live for global audiences, and jam with fans face-to-face.

Google wanted to make these live hangout concerts sound more like the stage, so today they are rolling out Studio Mode. As a musician, all you need to do is start your Hangout On Air, click settings, and switch from Voice to Studio Mode.

Studio Mode optimizes your individual audio for music instead of conversation, and no else needs to change a thing! Check out the video with +Suite 709  to hear the difference (and for the full effect, listen with your favorite pair of headphones).

Google Updates It’s Search Policies : Threatens Removal Of Pages Which Violate DMCA

in Google / No Comments

Google has just updated it’s privacy policy and is providing publishers with authentic content a great experience for their users via 200 signals to ensure search algorithms deliver the best possible results. Starting next week, Google will begin taking into account a new signal in it’s  rankings: the number of valid copyright removal notices they receive for any given site.

Sites with high numbers of removal notices may appear lower in our results. This ranking change should help users find legitimate, quality sources of content more easily—whether it’s a song previewed on NPR’s music website, a TV show on Hulu or new music streamed from Spotify.

Since Google booted their our copyright removals over two years ago, they have been given much more data by copyright owners about infringing content online. In fact, Google is now receiving and processing more copyright removal notices every day than it did in all of 2009—more than 4.3 million URLs in the last 30 days alone. So to control all that Google will now be using this data as a signal in it’s search rankings.

Only copyright holders know if something is authorized, and only courts can decide if a copyright has been infringed; Google cannot determine whether a particular webpage does or does not violate copyright law. So while this new signal will influence the ranking of some search results, it won’t be removing any pages from search results unless Google receives a valid copyright removal notice from the rights owner.

And it will continue to provide “counter-notice” tools so that those who believe their content has been wrongly removed can get it reinstated. Google says it will  also continue to be transparent about copyright removals.
